Sony World Photography Awards 2025: A Global Lens on Contemporary Stories

The prestigious Sony World Photography Awards has announced the finalists and shortlisted photographers for its 2025 Professional competition. Culled from an astounding 419,000 entries, these captivating projects represent a diverse range of perspectives, capturing the essence of our world today.

Now in its 18th year, the awards continue to champion originality and exceptional photographic execution. The rigorous selection process, overseen by esteemed juries, highlights remarkable series of work across a wide spectrum of categories, from wildlife and nature to portraiture and documentary projects.

"From narratives of community-building, to explorations of collective memory, to empowering stories of people challenging conventions, these works offer a diversity of perspectives on our moment in history," commented jury chair Monica Allende.

Showcasing Global Perspectives

The chosen works offer a poignant glimpse into human resilience, cultural heritage, and the pressing environmental challenges of our time. From the heights of the La Paz Golf Club in Bolivia, where indigenous women embrace their passion for golf, to the streets of India where female skaters defy societal norms, the photographs capture the spirit of individuals shaping their own narratives.

The finalists' works also document stark realities, such as the dangers faced by young people navigating gang-governed areas in Cape Town and the struggles of the Chad Olympic Team, whose journey inspired the creation of their country's first gymnastics federation.

Documenting Social and Environmental Issues

The selected projects delve into complex social and environmental issues. The "Memories of Dust" series explores the evolving role of the cowboy in a rapidly changing Texas, while "The Whisper of Maize" highlights the indigenous communities fighting to preserve ancient corn varieties amidst climate change's devastating impact.

Environmental concerns take center stage in projects like "Chilean Dark Embrace," which exposes the threat of light pollution to astronomical observation in the Atacama desert, and "Nowhere To Go," which depicts the plight of polar bears struggling with shrinking sea ice in Canada.

Honoring Artistic Vision

The finalists' works are not only technically brilliant but also demonstrate a powerful artistic vision. From intimate portraits capturing the resilience of Afro-Brazilian communities to poignant images of the aftermath of devastating floods in Spain, the photographs evoke a range of emotions and provoke meaningful dialogue.

The Photographer of the Year, to be announced at a London gala on April 16th, will receive a $25,000 prize, Sony equipment, and a solo exhibition. The finalists' and shortlisted photographers' works will be showcased at Somerset House in London from April 17th to May 5th, before traveling to other locations.
