The Age of Censorship Is Ending
Facebook's Free Speech Revolution
The Rise of Left-Wing Censorship
Once praised by Democrats as a platform for marginalized voices, Facebook became a target after Donald Trump's election. Left-wing outlets and politicians accused social media of empowering dangerous ideologies and allowing foreign interference.
"We can continue to stand for free expression, understanding its messiness, but believing that the long journey towards greater progress requires confronting ideas that challenge us," said Mark Zuckerberg in 2019, defending Facebook's commitment to free speech.
The Trump Administration's Influence
However, under pressure from the Trump administration, Facebook began censoring content on issues like COVID-19 and the Hunter Biden laptop story. The Biden White House also openly lobbied Facebook to downgrade conservative outlets like The Daily Wire.
Zuckerberg admitted that Facebook had become comfortable with censorship, acknowledging its impact on conservative reach.
A Cultural Shift
With Trump's reelection, Zuckerberg announced a stunning reversal. Facebook would revise its censorship policies, ending reliance on left-wing fact-checkers, unmuting political content, and moving the moderation team from California to Texas to reflect the diverse views of Americans.
"The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards, once again, prioritizing speech," explained Zuckerberg.
This shift highlights a sobering truth: Democrats have abandoned free speech as a principle, valuing power instead. As a result, free speech has become a Republican value, and its resurgence on social media is a hopeful sign.
