Syria has real opportunity to 'move from the darkness to the light'
Syria: Moving from Darkness to Light
A Nation's Hope for Inclusivity
Syrians envision a new era, one built on the pillars of unity and diversity. The nation aspires for a constitutional framework that safeguards the rights of all, regardless of social or religious background.
"It's time to move from the darkness to the light," said Najat Rochdi, UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria. "A national dialogue is crucial to amplify the voices of every Syrian who has endured immense suffering."
The UN's Role in a Time of Transition
The UN stands ready to support Syria's political transition, ensuring that all parties have a seat at the table. "We need to engage with every segment of society," said Rochdi. "From feminists to community leaders, their perspectives will shape the country's future."
Addressing the acute humanitarian crisis is paramount. "Funding is critically low," Rochdi emphasized. "Access to essential services remains a challenge. The UN will continue to advocate for increased aid."
Overcoming the Challenges of Recovery
Establishing the fate of missing persons is a pressing priority. "Families long for closure," said Rochdi. "They need answers to mourn and heal." Accountability is vital for justice and reconciliation.
"The creation of a new constitution must reflect the diversity of Syria," Rochdi stressed. "All parts of society must be represented to ensure its legitimacy and inclusivity." A transitional government should embody this principle, safeguarding the rights of all citizens, including women.
Women's Voices in the Reconstruction of Syria
The contributions of women organizations and civil society are invaluable. "Their unwavering advocacy for equal rights has paved the way for their participation in every aspect of the political transition," said Rochdi.
"The Women's Advisory Board has played a pivotal role in the past," she added. "Their network and influence will be crucial for building a prosperous and inclusive future."
International Support and Collaboration
The UN stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Syria during this critical period.
"Our role is to support and accompany the transition," Rochdi concluded. "This is their victory, their country. We will continue to engage with all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and prosperous path forward."
