While some, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, have called for immediate elections, Ukrainian leaders and election experts argue that holding them under current circumstances would be reckless and undermine Ukraine's sovereignty.

Trump, via his Truth Social platform, criticized Zelenskyy's refusal to hold elections, labeling him a "Dictator without Elections" and warning of the potential loss of the country. This sentiment has been echoed by some U.S. congress members and commentators who see elections as a necessary demonstration of democratic principles.

The Dangers and Challenges of Wartime Elections

Holding elections during a time of active warfare presents numerous logistical and ethical challenges. Millions of Ukrainians have been displaced, and a substantial portion of the electoral infrastructure has been destroyed, making it impossible to ensure universal and equal participation.

Yevhenii Radchenko, a former deputy chair of the Central Election Commission of Ukraine, who currently serves in the armed forces, emphasized the impossibility of guaranteeing the safety of election participants amidst ongoing hostilities.

"Elections must be universal, equal and free. During active hostilities, it is unrealistic to guarantee the safety of any of the participants, and due to massive Russian strikes, a significant part of the electoral infrastructure has been destroyed," Radchenko texted VOA from the Donetsk front.
