A Chilling Reminder from China's Past

I witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences of a state-controlled press during Mao Zedong's reign in China. The Great Leap Forward, the Great Famine, the Cultural Revolution – these aren't just chapters in a history book for me; they are deeply etched in my memory.

I remember the gnawing hunger, the stench of uncollected corpses, the barren landscapes stripped bare by deforestation. These horrors were born from government lies, amplified by a subservient press.

The Deceptive Power of Propaganda

State-run newspapers published fabricated stories of miraculous crop yields, even resorting to doctored photos. Those who dared to speak the truth – journalists and experts alike – were silenced, branded enemies of the state.

This orchestrated deception led to disastrous policies. Farmers abandoned food production for unrealistic industrial pursuits, resulting in widespread famine and the deaths of tens of millions.

The Cultural Revolution's Reign of Terror

The Great Famine paved the way for the Cultural Revolution's violent political purges. I witnessed firsthand the brutal "class mobs," the killings, the beheadings, all carried out in the name of ideology.

Echoes of the Past in the Present

These events may seem like distant history, but the lessons they hold are timeless. As an eyewitness to the devastation wrought by a controlled press, I see alarming parallels in the United States today.

While skepticism of mainstream media is growing, the suppression of free speech during the COVID-19 pandemic serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of our freedoms. The concerningly coordinated media support for Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign during the 2024 election further fuels this unease.

The Importance of Truth-Seeking Journalism

That is why I established the Dao Prize with the National Journalism Center in 2023. This award recognizes and rewards investigative journalists who pursue the truth, regardless of political pressure. It's this kind of unbiased reporting that is crucial to safeguarding our democracy.
