Leaked memo: Meta rolls back its DEI programs
DEI at Meta: A Changing Landscape
The End of DEI Initiatives
In a surprising move, Meta has announced the discontinuation of many of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
According to an internal memo, the decision was prompted by shifting legal and policy dynamics in the United States. Meta's VP of human resources, Janelle Gale, elaborated, "The legal and policy landscape surrounding DEI efforts in the US is changing."
"The term DEI has also become charged," Gale added, "with some perceiving it as favoring certain groups over others."
Rethinking Hiring Practices
Meta will no longer prioritize diverse candidate slates. This practice, which has been the subject of public debate and legal challenges, had been a cornerstone of the company's DEI efforts.
Instead, Meta will focus on sourcing from various backgrounds and building teams with diverse perspectives and experiences.
Eliminating Representation Goals
Meta has also terminated representation goals for women and ethnic minorities. Gale explained that "having goals can create the impression that decisions are being made based on race or gender."
"We want to eliminate any impression of this," Gale stated.
Focus on Fair Practices
In place of equity and inclusion training, Meta will implement programs that emphasize applying fair and unbiased practices for all employees, regardless of background.
"We are committed to ensuring fairness and objectivity for all," Gale emphasized.
Quote: "The Supreme Court's recent decisions signal a shift in how courts will approach DEI. It reaffirms the principle that we should not tolerate or promote discrimination based on inherent characteristics." - Janelle Gale, Meta's VP of Human Resources
Ongoing Commitment to Inclusivity
Despite the discontinuation of specific DEI initiatives, Meta remains committed to serving everyone and building a diverse workforce.
The company will continue to support employee communities, make its products accessible, and promote economic growth and opportunity worldwide.
